Caroll Spinney, who has been the voice and personality of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch since Sesame Street premiered in 1969, is retiring from the show.

He was also the puppeteer of the 8-foot-2 Big Bird until 2015, when balance problems forced him to the sidelines. His last Big Bird and Oscar voices will be heard in conjunction with Sesame Street's 50th birthday, which the Times notes will be commemorated on a 2019 show.

Longtime apprentice Matt Vogel will take over as Big Bird.
