When a six year old cat named Sugar fell several stories out of an apartment window, her future looked grim. Now, thanks to a partnership between FACE Foundation, Pet Emergency and Specialty Center (PESC) in La Mesa, and Veterinary Specialty Hospital in Sorrento Valley, Sugar will become available for adoption this Thursday afternoon, October 18th at your Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) in Encinitas.

Sugar’s story began when a senior citizen living on a modest social security income found her wandering in downtown San Diego a year ago. He described Sugar as his support cat who he looked to for companionship and love. Then Sugar fell out the window of the man’s apartment. It was a long drop.

Sugar was rushed to Pet Emergency and Specialty Center in La Mesa with multiple, serious injuries including a broken jaw, broken teeth and an injured left front leg.

It was obvious that Sugar needed several surgeries. The man contacted FACE Foundation, a San Diego animal charity that provides financial assistance for emergency veterinary care. Thanks to FACE and their group of supporters, Sugar received the surgeries and life-saving treatment she needed. Southern California Veterinary Dental Specialties and Veterinary Specialty Hospital (VSH) in Sorrento Valley provided Sugar with additional care at significantly discounted costs. When her owner realized that he could not pay for the ongoing medical expenses, he relinquished Sugar to FACE.

She ate through a feeding tube and her leg was splinted. Sugar recovered in the Medical unit at Rancho Coastal Humane Society. She was soon eating on her own. When the splint came off, Sugar had a couple sessions of physical therapy then began walking with no limp.

Kathy Zerkle, RCHS Vice President of Adoption Services, says, “This is a perfect example of what we mean when we say, ‘Together we save lives.’  It took the man rescuing Sugar off the street, PESC, FACE, VSH, and RCHS to save Sugar. We have several adoption applications for her and we’re expecting more. Sugar will be starting her new life…the life she almost missed…soon. She’s one step away from home.”

Donations are being accepted by FACE and RCHS to pay for Sugar’s treatment. For more information visit www.sdpets.org or www.face4pets.org.
