There's a type of blood-colored sea cucumber known as a "headless chicken monster" that not only exists in real life, but was just caught on camera swimming in the Antarctic Ocean.

The New York Times says that the creature "lives a mile under the sea, has tentacles and fins, and looks like a decapitated chicken ready for roasting."

Unlike finless sea cucumbers, the headless chicken monster can swim away to escape predators. It's only been filmed once before in the Gulf of Mexico, but this week, researchers found one about 2,500 miles off the coast of Australia while testing out new underwater camera technology.

"Some of the footage we are getting back from the cameras is breathtaking, including species we have never seen in this part of the world," says Australian Antarctic Division program leader Dr. Dirk Welsford.
