R.E.M. is considered one of the first Alternative Rock bands.  They experienced some great cult success in the early 80's but then really broke through in the late 80's.   It was during that time that they became more involved in political & environmental concerns.  They were definitely ahead of the curve on the environmental concerns and it was this week in 1993 that they played a Greenpeace Benefit show at the 40 watt Club, Athens, Georgia, for 500 people. The show was recorded on a solar powered mobile recording studio.

It was at this time that 'Losing My Religion' was a huge hit.  It's a song the band says was 'life-changing' for them.
