80's Rewind: A-ha - Take On Me

August 14, 2019

This week I have to feauture one of the biggest songs of the 80's that I grew up listening to and I'm sure you did too, "Take On Me" by A-ha.  I remember attending Public School 91 in the Glendale section of Queens, NY when this song came out.  It was blasting on so many radios and was impossible to not sing along to.

A-ha wrote and recorded the first version of the song in 1982 originally calling it "Lesson One."  In early 1984, they re-wrote the song as "Take On Me" releasing it as a single only in Europe.  It went to #3 in their native Norway.  Sadly, it didn't chart anywhere else, especially in the UK.  It was a big time flop there.

"Take On Me" became a smash in the US because of the animation in its music video.  The song eventually reached #1 in 27 countries and stayed at the top of the Eurochart Hot 100 for nine weeks.
