5K Paw Walk in the Garden This Saturday, February 17th

"Easy Rider" Bicycle To Be Awarded To Top Fund Raiser

February 12, 2018

An “Easy Rider” will be named at the 6th annual 5K Paw Walk in the Garden on Saturday, February 17, 2018 from 8 to 11 AM. Your Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) and the San Diego Botanic Garden (SDBG) will join paws to raise funds supporting people, plants, and pets. The top individual fund raiser will win an Electra Super Deluxe 3i Ladies bicycle and be named “Easy Rider.”

The 5K Paw Walk in the Garden is the only day of the year when pets are allowed in the San Diego Botanic Garden. Education and Events Manager Sam Beukema says, “It’s the walk that every dog is begging to go on. One walker tells us that his dog gets excited every time they drive by. This is an event to raise funds that support people, plants, and pets. There’s no reason not to enter.”

RCHS Events Coordinator Kelly Peters says, “We have lots of walking teams this year. That’s great news for people who have never attended, but don’t want to walk alone. They can go online and join a walking team or meetup group.”
Peters points out that the single walker who brings in the most donations will win an Electra Super Deluxe 3i Ladies bicycle valued at $829.99. “This is the Top Participant Prize. They get the bike along with $100 worth of gift certificates and two tickets to the San Diego Botanic Garden. There’s also a prize for the team that raises the most funds. And the Peanut Butter / Cream Cheese Challenge is open to any registered walker, no matter how much they raised.”
It’s not a race. Walkers can cover the full 5 kilometer / 3.1 mile course, but that’s optional. You don’t need a dog to participate. There are plenty of dogs there to pet.

You can see the course from a dog’s eye view. We put a camera on a dog and walked him through the Garden.  Check out the video below!

There will be pet products, food (for people), treats (for dogs), information and displays for animal lovers, a pet first aid station, and (of course) dogs.

There are only a few rules. Here they are.

  • Dogs must be kept on leash at all times.
  • No leashes longer than 6 feet (including retractable leashes.)
  • No dogs in heat.
  • Owners must clean up after their dog. (There will be poo bags available.)
  • Limit two dogs per person. Really. We mean it. No more than two.
  • Dogs must be up to date on vaccinations.
